I Like Big Butts
Sir Mix-A-Lot's 1992 hit "Baby Got
Back" is the definitive pop culture reference when it comes to ass. If
you don't believe us, just count the number of puns relying on lyrics to
the classic in any story you read about butts today (including this
one).
My Anaconda
Sir Mix-A-Lot’s ecstatic love of bum
had yielded much in the way of homage. Case in point: Nicki Minaj. When
she sampled the sire’s 90s jam for her 2014 hit “Anaconda,” the cover
she chose for the single—her ass out, booty up—sent a meme-ageddon
around the Internet. Minaj’s assets have always been a well documented
phenomenon, but the cover, and the accompanying video to the song, sent
ass appreciation into a tailspin. In many ways, she broke the world wide
web first. Minaj hasn't just used her ass to sell millions of
records—she has also been lauded by feminists for using her body to
commodify the male gaze.
J Lo's Booty
Bumming off the never ceasing bum
trend, J Lo released her own single "Booty" in 2014 to much acclaim.
Though Nicki's in-your-face derrière was the subject of shock and awe,
butt has been a part of Jennifer Lopez's brand since she emerged on the
music scene in 1999. Move over Minaj and let a pro show you how it's
done
The Most Glorious Of Them All?
Amber Rose recently flaunted her fine
behind in a series of photos on Instagram. Her ex-husband, Wiz Khalifa,
tweeted after seeing the photos, "yes, my baby's mother is fine as
fuck."
Twerk It
Though Miley Cyrus' bum isn't really
that big or even all that unique, it did become famous-ish after her
infamous MTV VMAs performance in which she exhibited to the stunned
nation the dance move known as 'twerking.' She has since retired the
move and is now on to bigger and better things. Namely, the Nae Nae, a
dance move that still utilizes at least a minute amount of booty
shaking.
Amazon Ashley
Amazon Ashley,
or Ashley Adair, is a 6-foot, 7-inch performer who has performed with
Miley Cyrus for at least the past year. She is often shown dancing
beside the tiny tyke, shaking her bum and being felt on by the rarely
modest Miley.
Beyoncé Has To Be In The Conversation
Beyoncé has always been known for her butt.
It might not be quite as "dramatic" as Amber Rose's or Nicki Minaj's,
but sometimes subtlety should be appreciated.
Tennis Toosh
Serena Williams' bum is a rare breed
among famous butts as it is the ass of an athlete rather than that of a
pop star. But it is still fabulous. Recently when asked why she didn't
run the New York Marathon with friend Caroline Wozniacki (both
pictured), she responded, "My ass is too big." So she knows.
The Butt Selfie
Just because Kim Kardashian is the
catalyst for derrière discussions everywhere today, doesn't mean that
she should be excluded from any list claiming to feature the most famous
butts in history. After all, Kardashian is the creator of the term
'butt selfie' in which a photographer takes a picture of his or her butt
using the reflection of the mirror. Perhaps she will include a
collection in her coffee table book of selfies soon to be released.
Historic Butts
Before Minaj and before J Lo, there
was Sarah "Saartjie" Baartman, also known as Hottentot Venus. Baartman
was a Khoikhoi woman with a bottom supposedly so large that she was
exhibited at freak show attractions throughout 19th century Europe.
During her life, she was poked and prodded at by experts in anatomy in
addition to being presented for profit. Even in death, her persecution
didn't rest. Her body was dissected and examined for more than a century
and a half before finally being put to rest.
