It’s been years in the making, but the world’s most dangerous group is finally coming to the big screen in Straight Outta Compton.
Rap-Up TV caught up with N.W.A members Ice Cube and DJ Yella during
the press junket in Beverly Hills, where they spoke about the
highly-anticipated biopic, directed by F. Gary Gray.
“It’s everything we dreamed it would be,” said Cube. “I don’t think
we could have made any better moves than we made on this movie.”
They praised the cast, which includes Corey Hawkins (Dr. Dre), Jason
Mitchell (Eazy-E), and O’Shea Jackson Jr., who plays his father. “I’m
extremely proud. I knew he was the best guy for the job,” said Cube of
his son. “It was good that he did what it takes to convince Universal
and Gary Gray that he was the right man for the job. I think this is
gonna be great for his career.”
So what was it like to see their life story on screen? “To see a
feature film that is compelling and do everything that a movie is
supposed to do—it made you laugh, cry. I don’t know if people even
expect the N.W.A story to be so rich and full of emotion and triumph,”
said Cube. “I think people are gonna learn a lot about N.W.A and who we
are as individuals through this movie.”
The talk turned to a potential N.W.A reunion tour.
“We gon’ do something. We gon’ hit the road a little bit, but we’ll
see if we get everybody,” said Cube, while Yella confirmed the reports:
“Something gon’ happen.”
It’s also rumored that Eminem will join the hip-hop trailblazers on the road. “You never know,” teased Cube.
Plus, they revealed some of their favorite MCs today (J. Cole,
Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne), and weighed in on the battle between Drake
and Meek Mill. “It’s great for hip-hop. It’s always great for hip-hop
when people get on the mic and battle and show their skills and show
what they can do,” explained Cube. “I think people love that in hip-hop
and it’s been a tradition and I’m glad it’s carrying on.”
Straight Outta Compton hits theaters on Aug. 14.
