Drake Breaks Billboard Music Awards Record
Drake went home with a record-breaking number of trophies at Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards. Not only did he perform “Gyalchester” at the famed Bellagio fountains, the OVO boss also set an all-time single-night record with 13 awards.
Surpassing Adele’s previous record of 12, Drizzy had some
reassuring words for the “Hello” superstar. “Hold tight, Adele,” he
said, after winning the night’s final trophy for Top Artist. “When the
new ting drops, you’ll get the record back.”
Besides the most prestigious Top Artist honors, Drizzy
racked up wins in categories like Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200
Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Songs
Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Tour.
Meanwhile, the massively popular Views helped Drizzy nab trophies for Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Rap Album. The LP’s No. 1 single “One Dance” — featuring WizKid and Kyla — also helped the 6 God win Top Streaming Song, Top R&B Song, and Top R&B Collaboration.
After praising his father for “lookin’ all sharp,”
celebrating Lil Wayne as “the man responsible for me being here,” and
Nicki Minaj as “the love” of his life, Drake left the show with these
parting words: “Life is like toilet paper. Either you’re on a roll or
you’re taking shit from some asshole.”
Earlier in the evening, Drake also showed love
to Vanessa Hudgens and Ludacris in an effort to live in the moment. “I
want to say Vanessa Hudgens, you look incredible tonight,” he said.
“Ludacris, we haven’t always seen eye to eye, but I’ve always been a big
fan of yours and I got a lot of love for you. I want to let you know
that face to face, while I’m still here.
“I want to say, Nicki Minaj, I’m so glad we found our way
back because I love you and I could never ever see it any other way,” he
added. “I want to say, Lil Wayne, if it wasn’t for the risk you took,
none of us would be here tonight. And I want to say, my dad got on a
purple suit with purple shoes. Boy, if you don’t stop!”
2018 could be another big year for Drake. His More Life playlist — which topped the Billboard 200 and is currently No. 5 on the chart — will be eligible for more Billboard awards.
